Aurora and Saskatoon Youth Soccer (SYSI) are pleased to announce a new format and structure for the SYSI competitive leagues, which is more in line with the aspirations and needs of players.

Over the past nine months, SYSI and its affiliated club Technical Directors have studied best practices regarding the formation and placing of teams within our leagues. Many academic studies and interviews with clubs and experts in player development across Canada and other parts of the world produced the following information:

  • Optimal development in youth players occurs when players of similar abilities are grouped together
  • A controlled study showed that in groups of mixed ability, neither the more advanced players nor the less advanced improved to the extent that they did when they were grouped by ability.
  • League play and games are more enjoyable for all when they are competitive, and any team could win on a given day.
  • Organizations that care, recognize their responsibility to ensure that child and youth players are appropriately placed in programs that provide optimal development opportunities.

City League:

is designed for players who need time to develop, either technically or physically or for those who want to maintain a level of flexibility in their commitment to soccer. It is also a place for beginner players over the age of ten, where they can master the fundamentals before moving to a more demanding environment if they wish.

  • More relaxed commitment to soccer
  • Participants will play one game a week and have one Technical session with the Club.
  • Competitive league with standings, playoffs, etc. - Standings and playoffs are for U13-U19 only
  • To create equal, balanced teams.
  • Volunteer Commitment Deposit - $100 per player
    • Refunds will be issued after you complete your 4-hour volunteer hours
    • Coaches and team personnel will receive their refund at the end of the season

Alliance League:

is designed for players who have a reasonable grasp of fundamental soccer skills and for those who consider soccer their main sport.

  • Players must commit to one game per week and two additional training sessions per week with the potential of being assessed and selected (if interested) to the Alliance Academy for one additional training session per week.
  • Those who register for the Alliance league will have an evaluation. If the Alliance league is not the correct place for them, technically, socially, and developmentally, Aurora Technical may place players into the City League. The players moved to the City League will receive a minimum of two sessions per week and can be moved to the Alliance League if they become competent in the areas, they needed competency in, at the behest of the Technical Committee.
  • League will be structured by age group into juniors and seniors (numbers permitting) ie.- U11 there will be a U10 A+B teams and a U11A+B teams boys and girls, again numbers permitting.
  • U11 and U13 will have predominantly Senior/Junior groupings if numbers permit
  • U15 will be divided into two pools based on competency levels, but may use the junior/senior format, should registration numbers permit.
  • The U17 and U19 groupings will be decided based on registrations.
  • Under 13 players are eligible to represent Aurora in PSL summer league
  • Alliance Players have access to the city-wide Alliance Academy (Extra Cost)
  • Evaluations time and dates will be posted on the Aurora website.
  • Volunteer Commitment Deposit - $100 per player
    • Refunds will be issued after you complete your 4-hour volunteer hours
    • Coaches and team personnel will receive their refund at the end of the season
    • Eligible selection into Outdoor 2022 Saskatoon Alliance PSL teams will be for those who participated in the Alliance League during the Indoor 2021-22 Season with a Zone team.

Alliance Academy:

  • Only open to Alliance League players registered with SYSI
  • Registration for try-outs will open in TBD on the SYSI website
  • Additional fees for Alliance Academy
  • Alliance Academy players will form future U15 and U17 PSL teams representing Saskatoon Youth Soccer
  • Alliance Academy Player Assessments will take place on TBD at the Saskatoon Sports Centre.
  • Players selected for the Academy must be registered in their zone and are participating in the Alliance league.
  • One additional training session, on top of the 2-3 training sessions with the Alliance League sessions

U7 and U9 Development League

  • One game per week.
  • Two practices per week ran with Technical assistance.
  • If there are multiple teams in an age group, they will be balanced.
  • Volunteer Commitment Deposit - $100 per player
    • Refunds will be issued after you complete your 4-hour volunteer hours
    • Coaches and team personnel will receive their refund at the end of the season

League FAQ

Why are there two separate leagues?

Saskatoon Youth Soccer has moved to the two-league format to provide a wider range of options for youth soccer to meet the different commitments desired by different players.

The City League is a lower financial and time commitment. It is good for players who have another primary sport/activity, want to play for fun, or are new to the sport. The program consists of one game per week, and zones may provide additional training opportunities.

The Alliance League is for players who have soccer as their primary activity and want to play competitively. There are more opportunities for development and as a result the time commitment is greater. It is similar to our current club program with one game and two practices per week. The Alliance Academy provides an additional practice each week. Players are expected to be committed to the program.

Why has the cost increased?

Costs are based on fees that the zones are required to pay to Saskatoon Youth Soccer. The new structure includes more field times, resulting in a higher cost. Fees also cover other costs that Aurora incurs in running the programs such as paid coaching staff and equipment.

Do I have to purchase a new uniform kit for this upcoming season?

If this is your first season with us, you will have to buy a uniform kit or if you need to change any sizes. The decision was made as we operate on a 2-year cycle of jerseys, and we are now at a new 2-year cycle this past Indoor.

Do I have to register for the Alliance League and Alliance Academy?

The Alliance Academy is a separate registration and program as it is run by Saskatoon Youth Soccer (it is city-wide, not zoned). Participation in the program is tryout driven, but players must also be registered in their zone Alliance League to be eligible.

Can I play in the City League and tryout for PSL?

No - Players in the City League will NOT be eligible for PSL the following spring/summer.

How do I register for the Alliance Academy?

Registration is done through the Saskatoon Youth Soccer website.

Can my kid switch between Alliance and City leagues?

Any player can more to the City league from the Alliance league if determined by the TD that the development needs of the player would suit moving into the Alliance league.  During a season once in the City league to move to Alliance League will come with the approval of the TD.

Will a refund be offered switching from Alliance to City?

Yes, you will receive a refund in fees based on the difference in cost if you move from the Alliance league to the City League

Is there a cost to switch from City to Alliance?

Yes, you will have the pay the difference in the fees if you move to Alliance league from City League

The general idea behind these decisions is creating environments to develop all players the most beneficial, fun way possible, while following long term player development.
